NOTICE – SALTWATER POOL

Members and Guests,

Please see below information about how saltwater based swimming pools work:

We can confirm that our swimming pool is and has always been a saltwater based pool.

Some people think that salt pools do not contain chlorine.

A salt pool sanitizes the water with chlorine just like any other pool. The difference between them is in how the chlorine is added to the pool. Salt chlorine generators convert sodium chloride (NaCl), also known as table salt, into chlorine. These salt generators, also called salt cells, work by electrolysis. The salt water is electrically charged, which splits the salt molecules and generates a natural based chlorine (Cl) to kill bacteria and Ecoli. We also have ultra violet lamp tubes which the water passes through to remove coliforms and other bacteria, finally we have sand based filters to remove any dirt and debris. These filters are flushed to the drain (called a backwash) three times a week.

This is why it is important for people to shower before using the pool.

Every so often we have to use Salt Pool Shock, which provides the benefits of oxygen-based oxidization while boosting free chlorine concentrations. This one-two punch keeps pool water sparkling clear by oxidizing and eliminating organic contaminants and helps ensure that sanitisation is maintained.

When adding fresh salt to our pool, this can cause the pool itself to go misty or cloudy in colour. This is caused by the dissolving salt, which affects the pH and chlorine levels of the pool.

Our swimming pool pH levels are kept between levels 7.2 and 7.4, and our chlorine levels between level 1 and 2 parts per million. When out of these ranges, as stated above, it causes discolouration. When levels reduce to its natural state (usually within 24 to 48 hours) the pool water clears.

When this process is happening, this may seem like the pool is unclean or dirty, but we can assure all our guests and members that this is not the case. It is just a little bit extra of salty goodness that helps keep our pool fresh and clean.

The Jacuzzi is not salt water based and is maintained at a higher level of chlorination of 4 to 5 parts per million.

We also complete a backwash on the pool (and Jacuzzi) 3 or more times a week, depending on use. We have a sand based filtration and backwashing system. When completing a backwash it reverses the flow of water, this dislodges dirt and debris that may have become trapped, and then expels the dirty water and clears our filtration system via a waste line to our drain. And our systems are then rinsed before putting back onto standard filtration.

We hope this helps you understand our saltwater pool, if you have any questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact us on reception@thehighfield.com
